ON THE ROAD AGAIN….

In February 2018, US News and World Report ranked Wisconsin 44th in the country for its road conditions. The report, based on 2016-2017 data, noted that 31 percent of Wisconsin's roads are in poor condition compared to Minnesota's 10 percent. The National Bridge Inventory rates the structural fitness of bridges from 0 to 9; 0 indicates the bridge is closed, 9 is a superior rating. Wisconsin's average bridge rating decreased from 6.5 in 2008 to 6.3 in 2016. If this trend continues, we will have increased numbers of bridges closing or imposing weight limits, negatively ...

People Are More Important Than Guns

Children at “March For Our Lives” events carried signs saying, “I am more important than your gun.” This message should be applied to our nation and its spending priorities. People are more important than guns. People are more important than war. People are more important than our obsession with national “security.” The same politicians who don't understand that guns don't make our schools, or our communities, safe also don't understand that guns do not make the world safe. Our huge, excessive spending on war, and preparation for war, does not keep us safe. ...

#Me Too

Survivors of sexual assault and harassment saying “me too” is not new. They have been saying it for a long time, but something has now changed. More people are listening. You can think back to 2002 and the hundreds of young boys saying “me too” as the silence around priests abusing children finally broke. Hundreds of boys said “me too” in 2011, as Jerry Sandusky was brought to justice. In 2014 we heard “me too” from dozens of women that said they were drugged and assaulted by Bill Cosby. While #metoo was trending, we learned of the hundreds of young ...

SAVE MONEY – HOUSE THE HOMELESS

SAVE MONEY – HOUSE THE HOMELESS and a corollary Save Money – Treat, Rather Than Criminalize, People Diseased With Substance Addictions “Ironically, ending homelessness is actually cheaper than continuing to treat the problem. “It’s not a matter of whether we know how to fix the problem. We have the cure for homelessness—it’s housing. What we lack is political will.” “Going from homelessness into a home changes a person’s psychological identity from outcast to member of the community. The old model was well intentioned but misinformed. You ...

I WAS WRONG ABOUT THE RURAL URBAN DIVIDE

By Sarah van Gelder, YES magazine I thought I knew something about Wisconsin politics. I assumed the state was neatly divided between blue cities, like Madison and Milwaukee, and solidly red rural areas that twice elected Governor Scott Walker, one of the nation’s most right-wing governors, and went for Donald Trump in 2016. Turns out there’s a lot I didn’t know. And the assumptions and stereotypes that I—and many others—hold are dividing us and harming our chances of building powerful coalitions across rural–urban divide. In early February, I visited ...

A DAY WITHOUT MUSIC

One day. That’s all I ask. One day for us to recognize how much we’ve come to depend on and simultaneously disregard music. And to think about life without it. One day without music in the doctor’s waiting room, the supermarket, the car repair shop. One day in silence while driving, while eating lunch at our favorite café, while having our hair cut. One day to live without a buffer against other people’s conversations, without music’s unique ability to suspend us in our own cocoon while noises of our increasingly crowded world batter us on all sides. Think ...
