RALLY ON SATURDAYS WITH US
Friends for Peace,
We will be walking around the 400 Block each Saturday morning at 10 am until about 11:30. Many come to walk and many come to sit on the corners of the 400 Block with signs and flags to be present for people who want to stop to talk.
Please join us as you are able! Bring a new sign if you have time. We do have some to share if you need one!
All of our hearts should be open, and in doing this we will be strengthened to take actions in support of a peaceful solution.
In Solidarity,
Carolyn, Claudette, Nancy and David
Democracy vs. Autocracy
Democracy vs. Autocracy
What do these terms really mean?
Defined by Webster’s dictionary, democracy is “a government by the people, usually through elected representation,” compared to autocracy, “government by a single, absolute ruler.”
Citizens choose candidates to appear on ballots through caucuses and primaries in democracies; and are elected through free, fair, secure, and non-fraudulent elections, followed by a peaceful transfer of power. In an autocracy, those in power choose candidates, often with pre-determined outcomes, and may refuse to ...
No Time for Games—Vote ‘No’ on State Constitutional Amendments
Did you know a big election is coming up this year? In November, of course! But there’s an election on August 13 that’s also important to your community and your future.
There are two questions on the August ballot which, if passed, will change the state constitution for the worse. I’m voting no on both questions, and I urge other voters throughout Wisconsin to do the same.
A yes vote on these constitutional amendment questions would give the legislature sole authority over the distribution of federal money. A yes vote would also take the governor out of the ...
Do We Want a Government of Laws or Men?
We just celebrated Memorial Day honoring the sacrifice of so many Americans fighting Fascism in WWII. Fascism is a highly personalized authoritarian system. Why should people obey an authoritarian? Their power relies on expressions of loyalty. One approached medieval kings with bows and paeans of praise. They were raised on thrones so that they were literally higher then the supplicants approaching them. Any violation of these protocols suggested that an individual harbored disloyal ideas and had to be dealt with in a severe way. Law is what the authoritarian says it is. ...
“Liberal” is Good for America
“The two parties which divide the state, the party of Conservatism and that of Innovation, are very old and have disputed the possession of the world since it was made...” Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
There has always been tension between “conservatives” and “liberals” in social and political affairs. This has been a constant theme of American history. This election year's rhetoric will again emphasize these ideological divides. But because of the fact-free nature of our political debates and advertising this will result in more name calling and fear ...
What have you heard about Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025?
What have you heard about Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025?
Some wonderful talking points from our friends at FAIR MAPS.
It was written by a consortium of the most extreme MAGA organizations and advisors - election deniers and Jan 6 supporters. It is not the Heritage Foundation or the GOP you once believed in.
The people who supported project 2025 are the same people who supported the January 6th insurrection.
The Heritage Foundation spent $22 million to prepare this authoritarian plan and although the personnel hiring process has ...
Vote No Wisconsin
Wisconsin voters will be asked two questions to amend (change) the constitution on their August ballot. These potential changes will impact both the process for distributing federal money, and who has the power to make those decisions. These large sweeping changes will impact a wide range of issues voters care about, from education to the environment to how quickly the government can respond to emergencies (like a public health crisis or a natural disaster). The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin knows that if these amendments are passed they will be harmful to the people ...
THE CRITICAL NEED TO UNDERSTAND
It is rarely mentioned in US history or media that Russia – the Soviet Union – lost an estimated 27 million people to the Nazis in World War II. This is over 50 times more deaths than America suffered with the loss of 420,000. Few were the Russian families that did not grieve. It is also rarely mentioned in US history or media that Russia was far more instrumental in defeating the Nazis than America.
Quoting Irish journalist Finnian Cunningham:
“Still, let’s not forget that the Soviet Union had been battling the Third Reich for three years before the British ...
Saving Social Security
Recently Wausau took part in a launch of Seniors for Biden in Wisconsin. We had former Alabama Senator Doug Jones come to Wausau to do a tour on Social Security and Medicare. Throughout the week, former U.S. Senator Doug Jones launched the “Protect Our Retirement” tour to campaign for President Biden across Wisconsin, with stops in Wausau, Green Bay, and Milwaukee.
Doug Jones is a former U.S. senator and current civil rights attorney. In 2017, he won a special election to fill a U.S. Senate seat in Alabama—the first Democrat to do so in 25 years in the ...
