A Call for Compassion

In light of the recent tragic death of a man experiencing homelessness in Marathon Park, I feel compelled to address the disturbing and callous comments that have surfaced online in response to this loss in our community. The dismissive remark — such as “Most homeless are addicts who don’t want to do better for themselves” and “He didn’t want help” — are not only harmful but also fail to recognize the complex realities that many individuals face. These generalizations are not only inaccurate but also shameful in their lack of empathy. It is ...

WHAT’S LEFT

What kind of message are we sending to our children and the world when we elect, as President of the United States, a convicted con-man and serial liar, with multiple bankruptcies and failed businesses? Someone who praises Communist dictators, cheats on his wives, and pays $130,000 to conceal an affair with a porn star when his #3 wife was pregnant. MAGA family values? It seems at times Like the world has been turned upside down. The very idea that Republicans could nominate someone for President, or that we would elect someone, who openly praises Communist dictat...

WHAT DEMOCRATS DID WRONG

Party leaders failed to see the long term need for younger, more vigorous candidates. The bulk of Biden’s term suffered from his shuffling gait, whispery voice, and apparent mental decline. Not that Trump is so much younger, but his demeanor as a bully conveys a message of strength. Sadly. Dems also failed to foresee Biden’s inability to win a second term and consequently failed to hold a 2024 primary that would have introduced all best possible candidates. Call it allegiance to a venerable old warrior (Biden) or inability to break out of an established order of ...

We are Screwed

“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” H.L. Menchen, American journalists in and social critic in the 1920s and 30s. Just prior to the 2016 presidential election an acquaintance asked me what I thought would be the result. I answered that I was cautiously optimistic but, “Never underestimate the stupidity of the American people.” ...

Are You Really Listening?

Considering we live in a two-party system; I loved Kamala, and I was happy to vote for her. She is such a smart woman, and I loved the joy and the happiness that was expressed in her campaign and in her speeches. The lines to see her were so long! I loved the joy she brought and the hope. Her infectious smile made you happy just to look at her. Kamala is a highly educated and capable woman, and we would elect her to the White House. The first female ever to hold this position. She painted a picture of how it could be for all of us.   But would it? Was she ...
