Friends of Rib Mountain Snowshoe Hike

There are so many beautiful events happening right in our own community. After our January snowshoe hike was cancelled due to lack of snow, this evenings event lent itself to perfect temperatures and plenty of snow. After the hike, the Friends of Rib Mountain offer hot chocolate, hot apple cider, treats galore, and a fire to toast marshmallows and hotdogs.

DETENTIONS AND DEPORTATION WILL COST US

Currently thousands of law enforcement officers are directed to arrest undocumented immigrants. Because the crime rate among the undocumented is actually low, many of those arrested are not charged or convicted criminals. Their undocumented status is a civil, not a criminal, offense. Large numbers of undocumented non-citizens are tax-paying, important members of our workforce. They build our homes, harvest our fruits and vegetables, pack our meat, staff our restaurants and beautify our yards. One member of a three-generation family of mixed citizens and non-citizens ...

Immigration Lies

President Trump’s Border Czar, Tom Homan, said, “If you are in the country illegally, you are on the table. We have millions of people with background investigations, paying a fee, standing in line to come into this country the right way,” giving the impression that people entering this country “the right way” would be safe. At best he was misleading the American public. Last week, 600,000 Venezuelan refugees with proper background checks and vetting by the Department of Immigration (DPI) had their Temporary Protective Status (TPS) classification cancelled. ...

WE NEED THE AIR OF THE TREES

This past October I had the opportunity to tour the Menominee Tribal Enterprise sawmill located in Neopit, Wisconsin on the Menominee Indian Reservation. The logs that come into the sawmill are harvested from the 220,000 acre Menominee Forest. They have been harvested in a sustained-yield manner. Since 1854 two and one-half billion board feet of lumber has been cut, that is the equivalent of cutting down all the standing timber on the reservation almost twice over. However, the volume of standing timber now is greater than when they started in 1854. The forest can easily ...

Indinawemaaganidog – We are ALL Related

Many Native American tribes have a word meaning "We are ALL related".  For the Ojibwe people that word is Indinawemaaganidog.  It represents a concept foreign to English speakers in its all-encompassing inclusivity.  Not only are all people part of a single family, but so is all of life on this fine planet, including rocks and mountains, rivers and lakes.  Knowingly, living in a world full of family is rich with implications.  We respect family, we honor and love our family.  We are grateful for gifts given, wanting to give something in return.  Most importantly, ...

Do Your Job

Anyone who uses a computer knows the importance of maintaining security.  We use safe passwords. We use two-step verification for financial and health records. We also rely upon our banks, medical clinics, and our government to protect our personal data and keep our information confidential. Would you put up with your bank giving your personal account numbers, balances, and transactions out to unvetted people that do not have bank security clearances? That would be stealing and compromising your confidential financial information! How about your Clinic or ...

IMMIGRATION, IMPACT AND POLICY

At present there is a lot going on in the world of immigration. This forum was focused on understanding the current policies that are driving the activities that are involving immigrants. CRISIS OF FAITH

In past times of turmoil and chaos, the faithful would often rely on their firmly rooted sacred beliefs. But what if those beliefs are part of the problem? What if they are facilitating the destruction of our very democracy?   American Christianity -specifically Christian nationalism– has damaged America in profound ways, causing a severe crisis of faith that’s driving people FROM the teachings of Jesus. Christianity is being hijacked by grifters and hypocrites, the very people Jesus challenged. He challenged the authority of the rich ruling class, called ...

A Little Poem for You

Starving child we’d once have fed Lay her out with other dead Once our flag meant “safe” and “free” Now it means autocracy.   Diseases we could one day cure Research ended, no one’s sure Our secrets open, now exposed To terrorists and other foes   Humble people, work on farms Shackled, sent to unknown harms Billions more for him and cronies Starts to seem as if they’re phonies

BROKEN PROMISES

In their busy few weeks since Donald Trump and South African immigrant Elon Musk took the Oval Office, the White House has branded their hectic daily antics as “Promises Made, Promises Kept”.   “Promises Broken” is more like it. Here’s a sampling:   Trump promised to have the backs of people in law enforcement.   He broke that promise when he granted a “full, complete, and unconditional pardon” to every convicted criminal who planned and carried out assaults and murders of law enforcement officers on January 6, 2021. &n...
