CHILDREN’S HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM

Senator Orrin Hatch had this to say in December about the Children’s Health Insurance Program (which he helped to create): “The reason CHIP’s having trouble is that we don’t have money anymore.” Senator Hatch voted for the tax bill that gives 83% of the tax cuts to the top 1% of Americans. Middle class taxpayers will see minimal tax relief for seven years. After 2025, taxes for the middle class will rise. Congressman Duffy also voted for this obscene bill. The stop gap funding for CHIP which was passed December 21st will fund the program through ...

Please Contact Your School Board

I am the parent of a first grader in the district. There are hungry children in our Wausau schools. I’m working on the “no thank you table/food pantry” at my son’s school. But we need accessible food pantries established on-site in all our schools. We need a clear district policy addressing this critical need. Some schools have food pantries already, or the beginning phases of one. MORE AND BETTER CHILD CARE IS NEEDED IN MARATHON COUNTY

Recently I heard Julie Burmesch (retired educator) talk about the importance of quality child care. One dollar invested in quality child care produces $4 in stable and healthy adults. Within the first 3 years of a child’s life, 80 per cent of the brain development occurs. By the time a child is 5, 85 per cent of his brain is developed. Environmental triggers can activate certain genetic tendencies. Children need quality child care and enough food and water to fully develop their brain and be ready for school. The first 3 years are very important. It is like growing ...

The Retirement Crisis

One of the annoying aspects of our broken electoral system is that issues of real importance are often ignored. Our elections are a money driven media circus of personal attacks, misleading sound bites, and ideological slogans. The real problems facing citizens and the country are not discussed in any rational, substantive way. Retirement security is one of these issues. Yes, there was some mention of Social Security in the last election. The misleading, party line talking points were reiterated during the “debates.” But the broader issue of retirement security for ...
