Citizen Sleuthing

Yes, Greenlight Metals, we are watching you. We are watching VERY closely. We saw on May 4 where the DNR has given you “conditional” approval for Greenlight metals to undertake drilling at the Bend Deposit in Taylor County. The Bend Deposit is located about 20 miles northwest of the city of Medford. The area itself is quite remote with the drilling area on a very small piece of upland, less than a quarter mile from the north branch of the Yellow River. Ground water is being monitored at several spots by the University of Wisconsin and is found to be between 15-35 feet. Yes, another water rich area that is enjoyed by canoes ...

Madison Action Day

Many of us from the Wausau area attended Madison Action Day on April 27. We were in full force with many other WISDOM affiliates throughout the state. Thank you to Ron Alexander and NAOMI for providing bus transportation. We heard from many speakers, we watched a Drum Circle and a stellar performance from the Raging Grannies. In the afternoon we met with our elected officials to talk about issues we care about and that affect all of us! The following is a few of the issues in the state budget: Restoring driver's licenses for all Wisconsinites Accepting the federal money to expand Badger Care Supporting the proposed addition of $12 ...

Great Local Authors

Local reads are the best reads. Starting with Gina Ramsey's "Burnt Gloveboxes: Embracing Life When it Goes up in Flames." This is a book of misguided adventures and blunders. Trust me I worked with Gina for a short time, the girl is hilarious. Her book has hit the Amazon best seller list. Give it a read, you won't be disappointed! Nick Vander Puy recently gave a book talk at the Eagle River Library. Having visited the H.E.L.P. Campaign for the Penokees years ago and learning so much from there, I had to see what more I could learn through the book talk. I asked an old friend to join me. Nick had us form a talking circle and with his calming ...

Saving the Porkies

Let’s work together to protect our water, air, soils, aquatic life, wildlife and people from the dangers from metallic sulfide mining. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan has a bountiful beauty; the waterfalls, Lake Superior, and the endless forests. The Porcupine Mountains State Park, especially the Presque Isle scenic area, all resting on the shores of Lake Superior, is absolutely priceless. Why would anyone want to destroy this? Highland Copper aims to mine under State Park land, under the Presque Isle River, and possibly even under Lake Superior. This would be in the west end of the Porkies. Plans are for a tailings dam that tilts toward ...

Badgercare Expansion

Citizen Action Wisconsin continued its statewide tour supporting Badgercare expansion with a stop in Wausau on Thursday, May 11th.  I for one am a proud member and I encourage you to join in the fight when it comes to issues that matter most to the citizens of this state. “The unaffordability of health care and lack of access to it is a huge public concern,” said Citizen Action Executive Director Robert Kraig. “People are skipping the medical care that they need because they can’t afford it.” Many people from Marathon and Lincoln Counties spoke up in support of Badgercare. One of the most touching stories is that of Peggy McDowell. ...

Second Verse is Worse Than the First

Not long back Middle Wisconsin shared a story with you, “The Photo of One Hundred Shares.” The photo and story were about the Porcupine Mountains State Park and the potential mining there. It is time to update you on that possibility of mining on State Park land, under the Presque Isle River and possibly even under Lake Superior. This is planned at the west end of the Porcupine Mountains. That story was bad enough, now we have photo two that explains their tailings dam on site. A tailings dam is an earthen dam, and it is created to hold back toxic tailings. Tailings are the ground by product that remains after the milling process has ...
