JASON’S LAW—BIPARTISAN VA OPIOD PRESCRIBING REFORM

You should know the story of U.S. Marine veteran, Jason Simcakoski. Like too many of our veterans, Jason Simcakoski, went to the VA to get help, but instead got hooked on prescription drugs. Tragically, Jason Simcakoski died in 2014 from mixed drug toxicity while receiving care at the Tomah Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Simcakoski family decided to turn their tragedy into hope for other military families. Working closely with Senator Baldwin, they crafted bipartisan legislation named in honor of Jason to reform the VA and stop the overprescribing of opiods at the VA. Senator Baldwin and the Simcakoski family worked together to get the job ...

PIONEERS IN THE SCHOOL PANTRY MOVEMENT

Students and Staff at D. C. Everest High School are Pioneers in the School Pantry Movement. Food is a basic human need and Everest High School is finding ways to support students who face food insecurity. Dr. Todd Bohm, the assistant principal, and Erin Jacobson, the high school social worker, agreed to an interview about the food and clothing pantry that was started in 2016 after seeing the needs of many students. Dr. Bohm wanted a convenient way for students and families to access food and clothing without the barriers. I. The pantries are accessible to students and families based on need with no forms to fill out. Some students are ...

PURPLE BULLSEYES

Purple Bullseyes line the map of the Thomas Street Phase II project. Purple Bullseyes designate the homes, apartment buildings, and businesses slated for some form of destruction. Most of the citizens inside these homes and apartment buildings are low income and vulnerable. Each person living inside a home, an apartment building, or business with a Purple Bullseye has a story. I did an informal, independent survey of some of the citizens on both sides of Thomas Street who will be impacted by Phase II. Over and over the people spoke about the anxiety, the stress, the trauma, and the uncertainty of being forced to move knowing the obstacles before ...

CHILDREN’S HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM

Senator Orrin Hatch had this to say in December about the Children’s Health Insurance Program (which he helped to create): “The reason CHIP’s having trouble is that we don’t have money anymore.” Senator Hatch voted for the tax bill that gives 83% of the tax cuts to the top 1% of Americans. Middle class taxpayers will see minimal tax relief for seven years. After 2025, taxes for the middle class will rise. Congressman Duffy also voted for this obscene bill. The stop gap funding for CHIP which was passed December 21st will fund the program through March. The Children’s Health Insurance Program covered 8.9 million children last ...

THE FLAG DROOPED SADLY AT HALF-STAFF

The flag drooped sadly at half-staff as the nation mourned the slaughter of Americans having fun at a country-music concert in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 1, 2017. The life-giving blood of 59 concert goers gushed, oozed, and flowed as they lie dying. The horrified ran, hid, protected and aided others as more than 500 women and men were wounded and mowed down like grass on a field oozing blood, crying, screaming, and writhing in pain. https://www.ktnv.com/news/photos-remembering-those-killed-in-las-vegas-mass-shooting#id0 https://www.latimes.com/projects/la-na-las-vegas-shootings-victims-list-20171002/ Please look at the photos of the ...

ARE YOU AN ANIMAL?

Are you an animal? Does your employer or former employer see you as an animal and treat you like one? Would your employer hire an animal trainer from a zoo to train you and keep you in line? Does your employer surround the top of the building with netting to keep you from jumping off and committing suicide because the working conditions are brutal? Are you, the tax payer, willing to mortgage and yoke yourself to a foreign company for over $3 billion without any return to the tax payers for the next 25 years or more? Each Wisconsin household will pay $1200 to this company with no requirements to hire Wisconsin workers. Are you willing to exempt a ...

WHAT’S A WOMAN WORTH?

What’s a Woman Worth? was the topic of discussion at the Women For Women of Marathon County meeting Thursday, May 4th. The pay inequity gap women face leads to the retirement gap later in life. Kathleen Marsh, a retired teacher and author, Kay Johnson a retired teacher and advocate for public school students and staff, and Joyce Luedke, a retired teacher and writer for Middle Wisconsin presented a Power Point Presentation based on research and a PPP done in 2017 by the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The discussions after the PPP were animated and lively as women shared their observations of a woman’s worth over the years....

Who Cares About Us?

More than 40 people were facing eviction from their “homes” if the Annabelle Apartments on Bridge Street were torn down to make room for another Kwik-Trip. We sat down with them and heard: **“This is a community. We look out for each other.” “We’re like a family.” **“We have a vested interest to keep this place safe, quiet, and peaceful.” **“We’re in a panic.” “I don’t want to sleep under a bridge.” “I don’t want to be homeless again.” ***”Where will we go?” “This is about a person’s dignity.” Although, Kwik-Trip withdrew their proposal to build a store at the Annabelle Apartments location, ...

FOUR DEATHS

Four people are dead in the Wausau community. Four families are grieving along with a shocked community. Thousands of people came to pay their respects to the fallen police officer. A woman who was abused and her six children will deal with the grief for the rest of their lives knowing what the husband/father has done. The families will never be the same. The Wausau community will continue to soul search and ask: how can this happen here? What do Wisconsin Republican legislators do? Propose a bill that allows hidden deadly weapons to be carried without a permit. This is cruelty—plain and simple—not only to the four who died; but also to their ...
